OKLAHOMA NATURALS 2ND ANNUAL NATURAL HAIR & HEALTH EXPERIENCE DAY 1 -CURLICIOUS NATURAL HAIR AFFAIR

A couple of weeks ago Resilient Soul had their 2nd Annual Natural Hair & Health Experience in Oklahoma City, Ok.  This year it was  a 3 day weekend that included, a meet and greet, expo, and hair show. The lovely ladies of Resilient Soul Terrainia & Shekeeta was kind enough to invite little me as a guest blogger to document the festivities. The first night started with a meet n greet called the Curlicious Natural Hair Affair held at the City Arts Center in Oklahoma City, Ok.  I could barely contain my excitement to meet and mingle with some of well known natural hair bloggers and Youtubers I followed for years.

HOW TO RECOVER FROM A PROTEIN OVERLOAD DISASTER!!

Protein overload is something your hair can and will experience if you are not careful!!  Protein is a necessary component for healthy hair.  But how much or how little is the question.  It's really a matter of balance and products that contain protein can be very useful in adding strength to damaged or over processed hair. About a month ago I feel asleep in my favorite deep conditioner that has protein as the main ingredient and the next day my hair was a tangled knotty birds nest. My answer for anyone dealing with  thinness, breakage, or shedding is a protein treatment. But I sometimes forget to stress the importance of following protein treatments with moisturizing products to create a balance within your hair.  Protein + Moisture = Healthy Hair!!  Anyone who has dealt with this issue knows how your hair will make you feel like you are not in control.  But there is a small window of opportunity to become Commander and Chief of your tresses again and it starts with:

First identify the signs of protein overload:

1.  Lack luster hair (no shine)
2.  Excessive dryness
3.  Stiff, crunchy, brittle hair (hard as a rock)
4.  Breaks easily (start to see an excess amount of little pieces of hair)
5.  Difficult detangling process
6.  Hair feels and looks dry as a bone
7.  Wiry
In other words your hair is a flat out unmanageable mess.

Ingredients to avoid during the recovery process:
1.  Soy
2.  Wheat
3.  Panthenol
4.  Collagen
5.  Silk Amino Acids
6.  Keratin
7.  Hydrolyzed protein
8.  All ayurvedic products

VERY IMPORTANT, After you have concluded you have protein overload, this will be a time if you have not already to start reading every ingredient on the hair products you currently use.  This will eliminate adding any more protein to your hair.

Recovery process

Due to the drying nature of protein (nothing is perfect), it is imperative that you immediately restore Moisture,Moisture, Moisture, Moisture, Moisture, and more Moisture into your hair.  My suggestion is to AVOID  shampoos (natural and non-natural), coconut oil (a form of protein), gels, and curling enhancers during this recovery time.  And only use protein every other week and heavy protein every 6 to 8 weeks.

Step 1

Condition wash every day with a moisturizing conditioner until your hair feels and looks right IE:  lustrous, moisturized, and soft to the touch.

Step 2

If you are like me and have to cleanse your scalp weekly, opt for a shampoo alternative like apple cider vinegar.  You can refer to the CLEANSE portion of my Updated Fall/Winter Hair Regimen where I use a ACV mixture to cleanse my hair.

FYI, the CLEANSE portion of my Updated Fall/Winter Hair Regimen was a result of trying to create a moisture and balance back into my hair after a protein catastrophe.  Shampoo, even when diluted was NOT helping my situation.  My hair constantly stayed dry and until I completely eliminated shampoo.  And because I loved the regimen so much I decided to stick with it.

Step 3

Deep condition weekly with a moisturizing conditioner.  You can identify a moisturizing conditioner because it will not contain any of the ingredients listed in the "Ingredients to Avoid".  Adding real honey (a natural humectant) and olive oil to your conditioner is another way to restore moisture.

Step 4

Spritz your hair with filtered H20. The reason I suggest filtered water because a lot of areas have hard water and when you are trying to create a moisture balance, hard water is counter productive.

Step 5

Seal in moisture (water) with only butters and oils. Except coconut oil which is form of protein.

Step 6

If possible try protective styling.  Protein overloaded hair will benefit from not being exposed  to the elements.  Hair that is tucked away will stay moisturized through out the day.

Suggested conditioners:  Suave Naturals Almond & Shea Butter, Tresemme' Luxurious Moisture, and Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing,

Suggested butters:  Qhemet Biologics Alma & Olive heavy cream, Shea butter, and Entwine Exotique Butter Creme Hydrator.

Suggested oils:  Olive, castor, almond, jojoba, or avocado oil.

Disclaimer:  These are just a few of the products that I have tried and worked for me.

For any Naturals currently experiencing protein overloaded hair have NO FEAR, your hair can and will return to its natural state with consistency and the tips suggested.  Like me, you might to revamp your entire hair regimen temporally until your hair is back on track.

Be Epic!!!

H&M struck gold literally with the new Anna Dello Russo collection for H&M.  But first who is Anna Dello Russo?   Before assuming her current postion of Fashion Director and Editor-at-large for Vogue Nippon, Dello spent 18 yrs at Conde' Nast Italia, as fashion editor at Vogue Italia and as editor of L'Uomo Vogue for 2000-2006.  This "fashion maniac" first snatched my attention on the popular street blog All The Pretty Birds. The self-described "passionate fashionista" has been describe by Helmut Newtonn as a "fashion maniac". Now the iconic editor fashionista has blessed us with a affordable version of traffic stopping opopulant pieces for the Swedish retailor H&M!!

UPDATED FALL-WINTER HAIR REGIMEN

For the fall and winter I am going to try something new and not use any shampoo!  I will still cleanse my scalp and hair but I am going to incorporate apple cider vinegar as my weekly cleanser.  There are numerous benefits of this dirt cheap wonder juice like, it can be used as a hair rinse (my weekly rinse) to relieve your scalp of  dandruff, or used as a hair lost treatment.  When taken internally can be a replacement for toxic heartburn medications, helps clear up skin conditions and blemishes giving a smoother texture and complexion, and may help improve bowel irregularity, thereby removing toxins from the body at a faster rate.  Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has long been used as a natural hair care product to promote healthy hair in both men and woman. Its acidity is close to that of natural hair, it's a good conditioner and cleaning agent and it's also an effective germ killer. AVC will also make your hair smoother and more manageable.  Don't worry about the slight vinegar smell you will notice after rinsing, it will disappear completely as your hair dries.

This is the brand of ACV I prefer

Step 1 - Pre Detangle & Deep Condition

Divide my hair into to 4 sections, apply an oil, olive oil/ coconut oil.  Then coat my hair with a conditioner Dabur Vatika Hair Mask (For Dry, Dull & Lifeless Hair) / Organic root stimulator replenishing conditioner and finger detangle.

Leave conditioner on for 30 mins to an hr.

Step 2 -  Cleanse

After I wash out the pre poo of oil and conditioner, I will clean my hair and scalp with my ACV mixture consisting of:

1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar
4 table spoons of honey
4 drops of rosemary essential oil
4 drops of tea tree oil

All combined into a applicator bottle similar to this:

 Step 3- Moisturize and Seal

While my hair is still moist but not soaking wet I will  divide into 4 sections, apply Giovanni direct weightless moisture leave in.  Then take a half dollar size amount of Qhemet Biologics Amla and Olive heavy cream to each section and seal with Jamaican black castor oil.

Step 4 - Massage scalp and twist

I will create a  rubbing motion with the pads of my fingers firmly against my head in small circles for 2 minutes. Same technique use in5 effective washing tips. Then I will make 8 twists and protect my entire head with a satin cap or silk scarf.

Benefits of scalp massages:  Your scalp is healthiest when it's clean. But it may also need a little stimulation to keep any potential problems away. A scalp massage can also increase blood flow which stimulates hair follicles in the scalp promoting hair growth.

Before suggesting anything, I always do a trial run on my self first.  I have used this regimen for month and have not experienced any issues.  Just wanted to try a different approach to cleaning my tresses and have more control of the the products used on my hair.

LIFE & TIMES OF A FUNKAHOLIC - HARD KNOCK LIFE NYC (PART 1)

This past weekend, me and  two of my besties Finichia of Fancy Curves and Sheila decided to rejuvenate and refresh our spirits by taking a little vacay to NYC.  My friend Sheila bought 2 tickets to the Jay-Z concert that was going to be held at the new Barclay Stadium in Brooklyn (pics in Part 2) and was nice enough to offer me one. To say I was not mentally ready for the amount of walking the city requires is an understatement. At one point in the trip my body collapsed reaching for my suit case, which provided side busting giggles. But overall the trip exceeded all our expectations and will be required yearly.

5 EFFECTIVE WASHING TIPS

One task that can be daunting for some naturals is WASH DAY.  Before I developed a tangle proof routine, washing my hair was something I avoided often.  In the past,  my shampoo days occurred once a month, believing the famous myth "DIRT" makes African American hair grow.  We need to wash our hair regularly to keep it clean and healthy.  We should always monitor washing too much, but washing not enough can allow bacteria to build up and this can provoke an allergic reaction and cause a break out.  I have experience this numerous times in the past.  The mistakes I made while washing or not washing caused irreversible damage to my hair. Using these effective tips will make your hair less prone to becoming frizzy and dry. And we all know DRY HAIR = DAMAGE HAIR!!

FLAVOR IN YOUR EAR ~ NEW ARTIST DALEY

Daley is a British singer and songwriter from Manchester, signed to Universal Republic Records. His sound combines soulful vocals and songwriting with hip hop and experimental production and has previously been described as 'Future Throwback Soul'.  The 22 year old singer first garnered buzz for his sensual slow jam “Alone Together” featuring Marsha Ambrosius, featured on his 2011 EP, Those Who Wait.  The first time I heard "Alone Together" the music was so good it gave me goose bumps.   He reminds of an early Maxwell and I excitedly await for future releases.

QRUSH HAIR OF THE DAY - BANTU KNOT

One of the staple hair styles in the natural community is Bantu knots.  Protective styling cause me to totally forget how much I love this easy no fuss curly look.  I need to revisit this style more often because the results never disappoint.  Numerous reasons why I  like this heat free do,  it is quick, easy, damage free, and your hair will triple in size over time.  No two Bantu styles will every look the same! The size of your knots will determine the final results your hair definition.  I prefer medium size knots because I want my finished look to be a "curly wavish" type of style. This is perfect for people who are natural, chemically treated, and  transitioners wanting to blend the 2 textures.

Check out this video from Naptural85 on how to achieve the perfect Bantu Knot:

QRUSH VELVET SWOON ALERT - MELODY EHSANI EARRINGS

A year ago I had my first introduction to this eclectic paradox of customed made jewelry that instantly intrigued my fascination with all things apparel.  With a variety of color hues and shapes, it is understandable why this hip hop inspired line is the favorite among notable celebs like Eryah Badu and Solange Knowles.  One aspect I love about her jewelry, there is no need to add a lot of bells and whistles just one statement piece and my outfit is complete.  Melody Ehsani stated in a interview, "I design to upset the equilibrium. I design to inspire. I design to serve. I design because I was created to do so. A portion from each pair of Ehsani shoes purchased will go towards the advancement and education of women in our society."  Reason enough for me to support, happy shopping!!

OOTD ~ JUST BLAZE

The inviting air signals the beginning of my favorite time of the year. With fall and winter approaching, you can count on me to find an excuse to update my wardrobe a bit. All the classic fall/winter colors such as brown, black, taupe, winter white, and many shades of gray, as well as dark rich blues seem to be prevalent during this time. But I love to layer and to break up warm hues by adding a unexpected pop of color or two or three. Cruising online this blazer caught my attention and immediately my mind was flooded with the many ways I could incorporate this treasure.  Blazers are a must, from baggy masculine, cropped, tuxedo, or a traditional style like the one featured in this post. I will pair it with everything from work trousers, jeans, shorts, dresses, and play suits. A blazers adds structure to your figure: gives curvy girls more angular lines, creates waistlines for boyish figure types and smooths out lumps and bumps for all shapes.

This is my style mantra "Be Free".  Being "YOU" is an obtainable gift we can all embody that will result in freedom!!

UPDATED SUMMER '12 HAIR REGIMEN & SHEA MOISTURE DEEP TREAT REVIEW

SOURCE

This summer I am trying something new, deep conditioning before I shampoo. My weekly wash routine until recently was to prepoo with oils, apply a protein conditioner (Mane n Tail), shampoo (Dr. Bonners), deep condition, and rinse with ACV (apple cider vinegar) mixture seen here as a final rinse.  For years I would wash my hair in the sink and over time my hair gain length and washing my hair in the shower was the only option to keep my hair free from tangles.  The main reason for the slight change, I am tired of getting in the shower to shampoo, getting out to deep condition, then getting back in the shower to rinse out conditioner...I am so "Hair Lazy" right now.  But with this new routine I am mindful not to create alot of build up through out the week so when I deep condition the product  will have a fighting chance to penetrate the hair shaft before I shampoo.

OOTD ~ NATURAL 360

NATURAL HAIR + NATURAL EARTH TONES + NATURAL ELEMENT (HEAT)

Earth tones is a color scheme that instantly draws me in. With a variety of color palettes in browns, tans, greys, greens, and even some reds, there are no limitations with this many options to choose from. I have always loved the colors of the earth because they complement every skin tone and body shape. And I said to myself why not add a little splash of neon too.  Also recently I have missed my beloved and sometimes forgotten FRO.  So for the last 2 weeks I have worn my hair out and while I love it, this time of year having my hair down is giving my hot flashes.  Back to protective styling until the weather lightens up.

SPECIAL EDITION: QRUSH HAIR OF THE WEEK- UP DO

This is a special edition of "Qrush Hair of the Day" and deserves to be renamed "Qrush Hair of the Week". Qrush Hair of the Week is provided by Desiree Irving, a premier hair stylist in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She has made a name for herself by providing quality work in a professional manner. I have personally seen her exquisite work and cannot believe I am just now showcasing it. She was kind enough to provide us with not one but two different up dos. Both styles are perfect for the person who is transitioning, getting married, going to an upcoming event, or wanting a protective style!!!

GODDESS BRAIDS

The goddess braid is a sophisticated hairstyle made from oversized cornrows. Begin by parting the client's hair in distinct sections that will determine the flow, style and direction that the braids will be styled in. Again, angled parts from the base help to form the braids. The front is met with the back braids and finished with coils to frame the face.

As you can see, she looks just like a goddess! This is a very low maintenance style. All you need to do is tie your hair up at night with a scarf and take it off in the morning and go!

FLAT TWISTS/COILS COMBO

Flat-twisting natural hair is similar to french-braiding. French-braiding used three strands of hair compared to flat-twists which only uses two. Flat-twists are a versatile style that works great with straight or coiled hair. Flat-twists are a low-maintenance style that helps protect hair that is prone to breakage and dryness. Flat-twists can be styled into up-dos, ponytails or your favorite curly-hair style

Part the hair from the hairline and go back to the nape of the neck. You can make the size of the part as narrow or wide as you desire. Use hair clips to keep the remaining hair out of the way. Divide the hair into two small sections at the hairline. Twist each section around each other, picking up small pieces of additional hairs from the scalp while twisting. The back consists of angled parts with flat twist. The twist meet in the front and help to form off centered coils.

If you are in the Oklahoma City area stop by and schedule an appointment w/Desiree @ the Hair Cafe, you will not be disappointed!

CHANGES

There are a couple of  things I am considering changing regarding QV.

1.  Sharing more frequently

My vision when I first started blogging was to document my OOTD (outfits of the day) and occasionally offer helpful natural hair care tips. Over time my baby has grown into a place providing recipes, hair, and personal style posts. Soon I will make certain investments towards Qrush Velvet because I want you the reader (it is all about you) to see visually appealing images along with creative content without compromising the original vision of the blog. Hopefully you will join me on this journey of evolution as we look forward to what is ahead!

2.  Youtube

One way I feel I can offer a contribution in the natural hair community is by providing more in-depth tutorials of various hair styles I have created over the years. I realize you can only understand so much from step by step instructions and seeing a visual demonstration would be more beneficial. Excited and looking forward to letting you into my hair "bag of tricks" not yet revealed on QV, reason enough to launch a YouTube page.

Another way for us to connect, I am NOW on Instagram @ qrushvelvet!!!

HEALTHY SCALP SERIES PART 1 - ESSENTIAL OILS CAN OPTIMIZE YOUR HAIR GROWTH!!!

SOURCE
One of the first steps to achieve growth is to start with a healthy scalp.  I started to doing research when I was looking for something to cleanses and at the time repair my scalp without the use of harsh chemicals.  In the midst of my research I read using essential oils can help stimulate the roots and promote hair growth!!! My first reaction was DING, DING, DING JACKPOT! There are numerous benefits to incorporating essential oils into your hair regimen.  Some of the most popular essential oils for hair growth include Thyme, Rosewood, Lavender, Basil, Peppermint and Cedarwood. You can also blend oils for scalp treatments and massages. By adding natural herbs and botanicals to your hair products the results provide improved blood circulation, hair growth, you may soon see that your hair becomes thicker, more luxurious, and radiant.

****Essential oils are an astringent, antibacterial and contain anti fungal properties too!! When applied to the scalp, it can help your hair remain clean and fresh between shampoos. Another important tip essential oils also promotes contraction hair follicles, thereby preventing hair shedding with regular use.
